    The Google Generation

The Google Generation (people born after 1993) has been said to be very efficient at finding what they want online.  They also are have the "stereotype" of being very good researchers and work well with modern technology. The following article recently published debunks many of these stereotypes and tries to find what really is the behavior of the Google Generation.

Answer the following questions after reading the below article.   Please submit your work to turnitin.com. Your response must be about a page or so in length.

    • From reading this article what was the basis of some of these Google Generation stereotypes.  Would you agree or disagree with them?
    • How might the studies findings effect the way educators assign research projects?  How can the educator help the Google Generation with the overload of information they are presented with?
    • The article finally suggests things the Google Generation is good at.  From that list which one do you strongly associate yourself with and why?

    Writing Through Design

As you work on your design of your web site that focuses on you and your interests it’s a good time to think about what the web site will say.  Remember a design is just a creative empty shell while the site's content is the living creative force behind your site.  Read the following article and answer the following questions in about one page, typed and handed into turnitin.com.

    http://alistapart.com/articles/betterwritingthroughdesign

When you were assigned this project of creating a "About Me" website how much of your initial planning and design went into the wording of your web site? Was it even important to you?

Can you tell when a web site has placed a focus on its wording and communication?  Give an example of such a site and explain your reasoning in conjunction with this article.

What will you do with your current web site in terms of written content that will help others indentify with your web site.  Use the following two questions from the article to help you reach desired language.  I need specific examples that will later be placed in your final web site.

    •  How do I want to make this user feel?
    •  How would I carry on a face-to-face conversation with him?

I really want you to think creatively here.  Don't hold back have fun with words that will draw an audience to your site and keep them coming back.

This assignment will be worth a test grade and will be due on January 14th.

    Google Docs

I know some of you share notes using Word documents over our student share on the network. However have you taken a look over Google Docs?

It allows you to upload your current set of notes and invite other to collaborate on them.  You can even track revisions others have made.  Plus you can access these notes from home or anywhere.

On Monday we will take a look at it in class and make set up a Google doc for this class and invite the class to collaborate on the notes.

Check it out a lot of college students are using it and starting now means your one step ahead of the game.

    Changing Faces - yahoo.com & espn.com

Two of the most popular web sites over the past 12 years have been yahoo.com and espn.com. Both in their initial state focused on primarily different things. Yahoo was a search engine and ESPN was a sports entertainment news source.

However a lot has happened to both sites since then. Each getting multiple face lifts to their design and each gaining additional content.

For your first assignment of the school year; please visit the following links and look over the changes made to both sites. Explain how each site has changed since its conception. What has been added and what has been removed. Has the page become crowded or is it spaced out well? It it easy to read? What is its primary function today? Finally how hard is it to find something on the web site in terms of navigation?

    Listening Is 50% of programming

The first thing you will learn in a college information systems or project management class is that the user is the first thing you need to examine rather than the existing system you are trying to update or replace.  From there you are challenged with others around you as the project is developed.  But than again these problems all steam from communication with your colleagues.

View the following illustration and at each panel comment on what might have gone wrong or right with that step. Also, if you had to blame a single person who would it be and who do you think programmers are more likely to blame?

Please leave your name when commenting.  I will create a turnitin.com assignment page since you guys like writing so much.

    What's Your Motivation

In the following article the topic of motivation is discussed.  While this does not directly speak about web applications or programming it does give you a clearer understanding on how to stay focused on your work no matter what subject.

To be a programmer can sometimes be very boring even though we enjoy the work, we become unmotivated.  For this assignment please read the article and as you go over "Phase I: starting out" answer each of the points the author makes and whether you do that already.

We will come back to this article later in the year for the second phase.

    A Little Research

For your first assignment of the year I would like you to begin to understand what web applications are and how we come across them every day on the Internet.

So in 500 words or more please explain what a web application is and cite some real world examples.  Also, words like Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 are thrown around a lot today, but what do you they exactly mean.  Then try a recall a web site that has undergone a Web 2.0 change over and explain what changes took place.  Try to focus on some of the details rather than the whole picture.

This will be due on September 18th.  You can either submit your paper in class or just paste your essay into this web blog.  Either way we will discuss your essays and try to work out a solid understanding of Web Application.

Please leave your name when submitting.

    Good luck.
