    A Little Research

For your first assignment of the year I would like you to begin to understand what web applications are and how we come across them every day on the Internet.

So in 500 words or more please explain what a web application is and cite some real world examples.  Also, words like Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 are thrown around a lot today, but what do you they exactly mean.  Then try a recall a web site that has undergone a Web 2.0 change over and explain what changes took place.  Try to focus on some of the details rather than the whole picture.

This will be due on September 18th.  You can either submit your paper in class or just paste your essay into this web blog.  Either way we will discuss your essays and try to work out a solid understanding of Web Application.

Please leave your name when submitting.

    Good luck.

    2. He mentions in his first point that everything that you learned so far is useless; what do you think he is referring to? Is it the code or the lack of standards in what you have learned in class?

    3. In point number seven the author lists the general benefits of CSS. Would you agree with him on what you know now about CSS so far?

    This Week's Assignments

This week we will begin looking into VB.NET.  The assignment sheet that I handed out early in the year will be used pretty much from this point on.  Please look over Assignment 11 on your sheet.  Also, quickly read through the CSS tutorial listed on Assignments 7-8.

For Assignment 11, please do Listing 1.1 and Listing 1.2 in Visual Studio 2005.  While the code is pretty much ASP.NET, VB.NET will be heavily used.

Please place the code with <script></script> in the above listings in your code behind file and not within the ASP.NET file.

    Read This Article!

I want each of your to read the article listed below. Read it completely, top to bottom. Twice if you have to.

The author sheds light on the current trend sweeping the industry. Web 2.0. He comments on how developers deal with trends that are often blown out of proportion.  He also makes note of how the Internet should be used instead of exploited.

I want you to comment on this article. Agree or disagree?  How often are you thankful that the Internet has helped you complete a task or find information?  Where do you see the Internet going in next few years in terms of popularity, marketing, and usefulness?   What does Web 2.0 mean to you?

    CSS - Master The Background

One of the best looking parts to CSS is how background images work.  Through the use of div tags one can specify a different backage with CSS where ever you want.

On a web site that I am currently working on (coursecritic.com) I created a div center colum with child divs and a white background. Then with CSS I specifyed my body's background image to be something I had created in PhotoShop. However, that image was then repeated to fit the screen no matter what size the window becomes.

Simple, but you can make this so much more elaborate.
One could use a fixed size image such is the case with our school's web site.

For you next assignment I want each of you to find a web site(s) that utilizes pattern repeats or a fixed size background.

You can find out what a web site uses by right clicking on their background with FireFox and click on view image.  The image will appear in a new window. If its very small then they use a pattern web site. If it has a fixed size then they use that.

While your at it. View the page's source code and see if you could figure out it's layout from just the tags.

If you could then your leet!1
